Gillespie Recruitment celebrates a year of growth, community and connection.
Gillespie Recruitment has spent 2025 strengthening its presence across Sunderland, deepening its relationships with local employers, and championing the region’s talent. As the year ends, Laura reflects on their progress and looks ahead to an ambitious 2026.
Any standout moments in 2025?
This year has been about embedding ourselves more firmly into the Sunderland community. One major highlight has been launching our own networking events at the NE BIC, something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. These events have enabled us to connect with a wide range of organisations, demonstrate the importance of recruitment done properly, and position ourselves as a trusted and approachable partner for businesses and jobseekers across the city.
Which recruitment trends have shaped your approach this year?
Skills-based hiring has remained a key trend in 2025. Employers increasingly look for adaptability, growth potential, and cultural fit, which has shaped how we evaluate and support candidates. Flexible and hybrid working also continues to be important for jobseekers, and we’ve helped local businesses adapt to those expectations. While we use technology and AI where it brings efficiency, our approach remains people-first and relationship-led.
How has the North East job market performed in 2025?
The region has seen steady momentum, despite a slightly cautious candidate market. Many people have been reluctant to move roles this year due to economic uncertainty, especially those who have been settled in positions for some time. Even so, Sunderland businesses continue to show strong ambition and commitment to retaining and developing local talent. Being based in the city allows us to see that confidence firsthand and support employers as they grow.
How do you maintain a personal touch in a digital-first industry?
Our size is one of our greatest strengths. Every client and candidate knows exactly who they are dealing with, and every conversation is genuine. We take the time to understand far more than job descriptions, we explore company culture, long-term plans, and the type of personality that will make a real difference. That depth of understanding builds lasting relationships and sets us apart from larger, more transactional agencies.
Share a success story from this year.
One highlight has been our growing partnership with The Wellness Collective NE, supporting Active Families NE. Working closely with them has allowed us to meet their staffing needs while also supporting initiatives that positively impact families and young people in the region. We’ve also helped several Sunderland SMEs build strong teams this year, placing candidates who have gone on to make a meaningful contribution. Seeing both businesses and individuals thrive is what drives us.
How do you support your team?
Recruitment can be fast-paced and demanding, so we prioritise open communication and a supportive environment. We encourage honest discussions, celebrate achievements, and foster a culture where everyone looks out for each other. Creating a positive, collaborative workspace helps us stay motivated and ensures we continue delivering a highquality, people-focused service.
What role will technology play in your strategy going into 2026?
AI will continue to help us streamline administrative tasks and early-stage screening, giving us more time to focus on building relationships. While technology improves efficiency, it will never replace the human side of recruitment. For us, it enhances our approach, it doesn’t define it.
Are there exciting plans for 2026?
Absolutely. We plan to expand our networking events, strengthen partnerships across Sunderland, and broaden the services we offer to local businesses. Our goal is to continue evolving into the city’s go-to recruitment partner, known for honesty, quality, and genuine community involvement.
Any personal goals for the year ahead?
For 2026, my focus is on balance, wellbeing, and continued personal and professional growth. I’m placing more emphasis on fitness and healthy routines, ensuring I stay energised and positive. Within the business, my aim is simple: continue enjoying the work, supporting people, building connections, and seeing the impact our small team can make across the region.
