Charity Golf Day Raises Over £6,300 For Construction Workers’ Wellbeing

Issue 117

The Lighthouse Charity’s North East region has raised an impressive £6,321 through a charity golf day held at Ramside Hall Golf Club, Durham.

The event united construction companies from across the North East to support the Lighthouse Charity, which provides 24/7 holistic support to the UK and Ireland construction community on all aspects of emotional, physical and financial wellbeing.

Now in its 11th year, the North East charity golf day saw 20 teams compete on the championship Prince Bishops Course followed by a barbecue. The tournament provided an excellent opportunity for Tier 1 contractors, regional contractors and suppliers to connect and support a shared cause.

The top three teams were MGL Group, Carney Consultancy and Latus Group, with MGL retaining the trophy for the second consecutive year. Their involvement, along with all the companies represented, highlights the growing commitment of the construction sector to support workforce wellbeing.

The event is a sell-out every year, with several companies having supported it since it first launched in 2014.

The Lighthouse Charity offers a wide range of free and confidential services, including a 24/7 helpline, live web chat and text support. These services are designed to help individuals and their families navigate challenges relating to mental health, physical injury, financial hardship and more. Additional resources include a self-support app, a network of Lighthouse Beacons who provide a safe space for people to share concerns and the charity’s Wellbeing Academy, which offers leadership and soft skills training across multiple platforms.

The charity’s work is more vital than ever. A recent report from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) – Understanding Mental Health in the Built Environment 2025 – outlined the proactive steps both SMEs and large contractors can take to improve the wellbeing of their teams and, in turn, support a positive wellbeing culture.

Founded in 1956, The Lighthouse Charity remains deeply connected to its North East roots. Its name and logo pay tribute to St Mary’s Lighthouse in Tyneside, a symbol of hope and guidance that reflects the charity’s mission: ensuring no construction worker or their family faces crisis alone.

The golf day was organised by the charity’s North East committee, led by chair Sarah Sidey, with key support from Angela Carney, managing director of Carney Consultancy, and Nick Redpath, operations director at Northern Counties Safety Group. Committee members Debbie Flynn and Catriona Lingwood also volunteered on the day to ensure the event’s success.

Sarah Sidey, said; “It was a fantastic day from start to finish and once again the North East construction industry has shown how committed it is to improving wellbeing within its community. These events are about more than fundraising, they spark conversations and show our workforce that they are not alone. The response we’re seeing proves that real change is happening.”

Angela Carney, said: “The charity relies on the generosity of businesses across the industry. Every working day in the UK, two construction workers sadly take their own lives. Millions of workdays are lost due to illness and injury. We need to break the stigma around mental health and create open, supportive environments. Working together, we can make a real difference.”

Funds raised from the golf day will directly contribute to sustaining the charity’s essential proactive and reactive charitable services.
