Yorkshire is an incredible place to live, work and visit. The largest UK county, Yorkshire is home to stunning scenery, bustling cities, numerous attractions and a friendly bunch of people.
One of the lesser-known things about Yorkshire is that it is full to the brim of innovative businesses with a combined value of nearly £30 billion, across several different sectors. Let’s take a look at some of the booming industries across Yorkshire.
Legal
Leeds is home to many thriving law firms. If you need any type of legal advice, you will find a number of expert lawyers ready to help you.
The legal sector in Leeds contributes £374 million to the local economy and is home to 11% of all law firms. Moving away from the central hub of London, these firms can enjoy a cheaper standard of living whilst still enjoying the hustle and bustle of a large city. There are plenty of suburbs that are home to smaller law firms too, so commuters may have a shorter journey in the morning.
Creative
West Yorkshire in particular has had a boom in creative businesses. Tracy Brabin, the mayor, promised to cement West Yorkshire as a home for creatives as it is home to the largest broadcasters in the country already.
In the year preceding June 2023, almost 48,000 creative, sports and cultural job roles were advertised which equates to a 17% rise on the year before as well as three times the national average rise of 6%.
In July 2023, following this job boom, the mayor further announced a £1.7 million package to support skills development in the sector. It would appear that this sector is only set to increase further as people are drawn to the area to get into the industry.
Tech
Across 2022, the technology industry in the UK surpassed the $1 trillion mark, making it the third country in the world to do this, after China and the USA. At the end of 2022, Yorkshire was home to 2521 startups, which is just short of the amount in the entirety of Scotland.
Data gathered this year shows that 71% of the tech companies in Yorkshire are actively looking for investment for growth. This suggests that there will be more jobs in the future, further growing the industry and opportunities.
Manufacturing
South Yorkshire, much like its western counterpart, has also been the beneficiary of investment. The government has enabled the region to receive £1.2 billion of funding to create the UK’s first Investment Zone focusing on Advanced Manufacturing.
Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley will stand to benefit from around 8000 more jobs by 2030. Companies such as Boeing, Loop Technology and the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre have already pledged their backing, along with several other large companies.
