My Fair Lady

Issue 87

Following the easing of Covid restrictions 2022 was a golden year for the Sunderland Empire with a plethora of wonderful shows.

The New Year appears to have kicked off in similar vein if the stage adaptation of My Fair Lady is anything to go by.

Over almost 3 spellbinding hours a capacity crown sat captivated by the story which depicts a poor Cockney flower seller Eliza Dolittle learning to speak “proper” English to make her presentable in the high society of Edwardian London.

Charlotte Kennedy was a revelation in the role capturing Eliza’s transformation into a “lady” absolutely perfectly. What an incredible voice also.

The award winning Henry Higgins was perfectly cast as the arrogant phonetics professor Henry Higgins, whilst Eastenders legend Adam Woodyatt displayed tremendous comic timing as Eliza’s father Alfred P.Doolittle.

Ably supported by a wonderful ensemble My Fair Lady provided the perfect antidote to any lingering Christmas blues.

Five stars. We couldnt recommend higher.
